How to Set Up and Manage Your Payment Methods on Payable.at
What Are Payment Methods on Payable.at?
Payment methods are the individual payment options you add to your Payable.at page. These are the buttons and links your clients click to pay you through their preferred payment app or service.
Instead of sending separate links for PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, and other services, you add them all to your Payable.at page once. Then you share a single link that displays all your payment options in one clean, professional place.
Why Use Multiple Payment Methods?
Different clients prefer different ways to pay. Some only use PayPal. Others swear by Venmo. Some prefer traditional methods like Zelle or bank transfers.
By offering multiple payment methods, you:
- Remove payment friction: Clients can use whatever app they already have
- Get paid faster: No waiting for clients to set up new accounts
- Look professional: A organized payment page is more credible than scattered payment links
- Increase payment rates: The easier you make it, the more likely clients will pay promptly
- Reduce back-and-forth: No more “Do you take [insert payment app]?” messages
Supported Payment Methods

Managing Your Payment Methods
Reordering Payment Methods
The order of your payment methods matters. The first methods listed appear at the top of your page, making them more likely to be used.
To Reorder:
- Go to your Links dashboard
- Look for drag handles (usually three horizontal lines) next to each payment method
- Click and drag methods up or down to reorder them
- Changes save automatically
Pro Tip: Put your preferred payment method first. If you prefer PayPal because of lower fees, make it the first option clients see.
Editing Payment Methods
Need to update a payment link or username?
- Find the payment method in your Links dashboard
- Click the “Edit” button (usually a pencil icon or “Edit” text)
- Update the details, instructions, or settings
- Save your changes
Common reasons to edit:
- You changed your Venmo username
- You got a new PayPal.me link
- You want to add or update instructions
- You switched to a business account
Deleting Payment Methods
If you no longer use a payment method:
- Find the method in your Links dashboard
- Click the “Delete” or “Remove” button
- Confirm the deletion
Warning: Once deleted, this payment method will no longer appear on your Payable.at page or any payment requests using it. Make sure you really want to remove it before confirming.
Best Practices for Payment Methods
1. Offer 3-5 Payment Options
Don’t overwhelm clients with too many choices. Research shows that too many options can lead to decision paralysis.
Good example:
- PayPal
- Venmo
- Zelle
- Stripe
Too many:
- PayPal
- Venmo
- Cash App
- Zelle
- Apple Pay
- Stripe
- Square
- Wire Transfer
- Check
- Bitcoin
2. Prioritize Low-Fee Options
Put payment methods with lower fees first. This encourages clients to use methods that cost you less.
For example:
- Zelle (free)
- Venmo (free for personal)
- PayPal (2.9% + $0.30 fee)
- Stripe (2.9% + $0.30 fee)
3. Use Clear, Simple Instructions
If you add custom instructions, keep them brief and actionable.
Good:
- “Include invoice # in payment note”
- “Send to: [email protected]“
- “Use email associated with your account”
Bad:
- “Please make sure to include the invoice number in the payment description field when you send the payment so I can properly track and reconcile it in my accounting system”
4. Keep Payment Details Updated
Nothing looks worse than a broken payment link. Regularly check that:
- Links still work
- Usernames haven’t changed
- Email addresses are current
- Instructions are accurate
Set a calendar reminder to review your payment methods every 3-6 months.
5. Test Your Payment Methods
Before sharing your Payable.at page:
- Click each payment method to make sure it works
- Send test payments to yourself (if possible)
- Check that instructions display correctly
- View your page on mobile and desktop
6. Consider Your Client Base
Think about who pays you most often:
Younger clients/freelancers: Venmo, Cash App, PayPal Business clients: ACH transfer, check, PayPal Business International clients: Wise, PayPal, wire transfer Tech-savvy clients: Cryptocurrency, Apple Pay
Tailor your payment method order to match your typical client preferences.
7. Add Context When Needed
Use the custom instructions field to clarify:
- Preferred payment apps
- Payment timing expectations
- Reference information to include
- Account holder names if different from your display name

Security and Privacy
What Payable.at Stores
Payable.at only stores:
- Payment method labels (e.g., “PayPal”)
- Public payment information (e.g., @venmohandle, paypal.me links)
- Custom instructions you add
What Payable.at Does NOT Store
- Your account passwords
- Private banking details
- Payment card numbers
- Transaction history
How Payments Work
When a client clicks a payment method on your Payable.at page:
- They’re directed to that payment platform (PayPal, Venmo, etc.)
- They complete the payment on that platform
- Payable.at does not process, hold, or see the payment
You receive payment directly through your chosen payment apps, exactly as if you’d sent the client those links individually.
Getting the Most Out of Your Payment Methods
Track Which Methods Clients Use (Pro Feature)
With a Pro account, you can see analytics on:
- Which payment methods get clicked most
- Which methods actually result in payments
- Client preferences over time
Use this data to:
- Optimize your payment method order
- Remove rarely-used options
- Focus on what your clients prefer
Update Your Page Seasonally
Client payment preferences can change:
- During holidays, some apps offer bonuses for using them
- Tax season might mean more business clients using ACH
- Summer might bring more cash-preferring clients
Review and adjust your payment methods quarterly.
Communicate Your Preferred Method
If you have a strong preference (due to fees, speed, or convenience), let clients know:
In your bio: “Preferred: Zelle for instant payments”
In custom instructions: “Zelle is my preferred method (fee-free!)”
In your outreach: “For fastest payment, use the Zelle option on my payment page”
Most clients will accommodate your preference if you make it clear.
Next Steps
Now that you understand how to manage payment methods:
- Add your first payment method if you haven’t already
- Order them strategically with your preferred method first
- Test each link to make sure everything works
- Share your Payable.at link with clients
Your Payable.at page is live and ready to accept payments as soon as you add at least one payment method.
