Stripe Fees Explained: What You Actually Pay (2026)
Stripe's pricing page says "2.9% + 30 cents." That's the starting point, but it's not the whole story. Here's every fee Stripe charges and what you'll actually pay.
Stripe Standard Fees
Online Payments (Payment Links, Checkout, API)
- U.S. cards: 2.9% + $0.30
- International cards: 3.9% + $0.30
- Currency conversion: Additional 1% on top of international fees
In-Person Payments (Stripe Terminal)
- Card present: 2.7% + $0.05
- Contactless/mobile wallet: 2.7% + $0.05
Invoicing
- Stripe Invoicing: 0.4% per paid invoice (on top of standard processing fees)
- Minimum: $2 per invoice
What Stripe Fees Look Like in Practice
| Payment | Fee (U.S. Card) | You Receive | Effective Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| $25 | $1.03 | $23.97 | 4.1% |
| $50 | $1.75 | $48.25 | 3.5% |
| $100 | $3.20 | $96.80 | 3.2% |
| $250 | $7.55 | $242.45 | 3.0% |
| $500 | $14.80 | $485.20 | 3.0% |
| $1,000 | $29.30 | $970.70 | 2.9% |
| $5,000 | $145.30 | $4,854.70 | 2.9% |
Key insight: The $0.30 flat fee hurts more on small payments. A $25 payment has an effective rate of 4.1%, while a $1,000 payment is closer to 2.9%. If your average transaction is under $50, Stripe's fees hit harder.

- Radar for Fraud Teams (advanced): $0.07 per screened transaction

Stripe is on the higher end for fees but offers the most developer-friendly tools, best checkout experience, and widest card acceptance.
When Stripe Fees Are Worth It
- You need credit card acceptance. Many clients, especially corporate ones, need to pay by card for expense tracking. Stripe is the industry standard.
- You want a professional checkout. Stripe's checkout page looks trustworthy and converts well.
- You process large transactions. The 2.9% rate is most competitive on higher-dollar amounts where the $0.30 flat fee is negligible.
- You need subscription billing. Stripe handles recurring payments natively.
How to Minimize Stripe Fees
- Offer free payment methods too. Give clients the option to pay by Zelle (free) or Venmo (1.9%) alongside card. Many will choose the cheaper option, saving you fees.
- Avoid small transactions. The $0.30 flat fee makes transactions under $25 disproportionately expensive.
- Batch charges when possible. One $500 charge costs $14.80. Five $100 charges cost $16.00.
Payable.at integrates Stripe Connect for credit card payments alongside Venmo, PayPal, and Zelle on a single page. Clients who prefer card use Stripe. Clients who prefer a cheaper method use Venmo or Zelle. You save on fees without losing flexibility.
