Stripe Payment Link: How to Create and Share One

Stripe Payment Links let you accept credit card payments without building a website or writing any code. You create a link, share it with your client, and they pay by card. The money goes to your bank account.

Here's exactly how to set it up.

What Is a Stripe Payment Link?

A Stripe Payment Link is a URL that opens a Stripe-hosted checkout page. Your client clicks the link, enters their card info, and pays. You don't need a website, an app, or any technical setup beyond a Stripe account.

Example: https://buy.stripe.com/abc123xyz

How to Create a Stripe Payment Link

Step 1: Create a Stripe Account

Go to stripe.com and sign up. You'll need to verify your identity and connect a bank account for payouts. This takes a few minutes.

Step 2: Go to Payment Links

In your Stripe Dashboard, navigate to Payment Links in the left sidebar (under "Payments").

Step 3: Create a New Link

Click "Create payment link" and configure:

  • Product name: What the client is paying for (e.g., "Logo Design" or "House Cleaning - March")
  • Price: Set a fixed amount, or let the client enter a custom amount
  • Currency: USD or any supported currency
  • Quantity: Usually 1 for services

Step 4: Customize (Optional)

  • Add your logo and brand colors to the checkout page
  • Collect additional info (phone number, billing address, etc.)
  • Set up a confirmation page or redirect after payment
  • Enable promotions or discounts

Step 5: Copy and Share

Click "Create link" and copy the URL. Share it via email, text, social media, or anywhere else.

Stripe Payment Link Fees

Stripe charges:

  • 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction for U.S. cards
  • 3.9% + $0.30 for international cards
  • No monthly fees, no setup fees, no minimum

On a $200 payment, you'd pay about $6.10 in fees and receive $193.90.

When to Use Stripe Payment Links

  • You need to accept credit cards. Not everyone has Venmo or PayPal. Stripe lets anyone pay with a card.
  • You want professional checkout. The Stripe checkout page looks polished and trustworthy.
  • You're charging larger amounts. Clients paying $500+ often prefer card (especially if it's a business expense they need to track).
  • You need receipts. Stripe automatically generates receipts for every payment.

When Stripe Payment Links Aren't Enough

Stripe is great for card payments, but:

  • Some clients don't want to pay by card. They'd rather use Venmo, Zelle, or PayPal to avoid processing fees on their end.
  • Each link is for a specific product/amount. You need to create a new link for each client or each service. That's fine for 5 clients, but not 50.
  • No automatic follow-up. If the client doesn't click the link, Stripe doesn't remind them.

Combine Stripe With All Your Payment Methods

Payable.at integrates with Stripe Connect so you can accept credit card payments alongside Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, and Cash App on a single payment page.

Instead of creating individual Stripe links for each client, you create one payment page. Clients who want to pay by card tap "Pay with Card" and go through a Stripe-powered checkout. Clients who prefer Venmo or Zelle see those options too.

Add automated payment requests and reminders, and you've got a complete payment collection system without cobbling together multiple tools.
